ROCKWALL – County Commissioner Cliff Sevier was hit and knocked to the ground by a car being driven by a man fleeing from Rockwall Police last Friday morning near the Square.
Sevier told The Rockwall News he was surprised but not injured when the car hit him at the intersection of Goliad and Kaufman Streets across the street from the historic county courthouse.
He explained that he noticed the driver of the car seemed to be having some kind of problem so he and a friend walked across the street from the courthouse to ask him if he needed any assistance.
That’s when the driver suddenly turned right from Kaufman onto N. Goliad, which is a one-way street, and hit the Commissioner.
“It really surprised me when he turned the wrong direction into traffic,”said Sevier. “After the front of the car hit me in the legs and flipped me up on the hood, I slid off as fast as I could onto my feet.”
“The car did stop when it hit me but then immediately started backing up onto Kaufman St. Then the police started chasing him. Turns out he had pointed a gun at somebody in Rowlett and then driven across the Highway 66 bridge into Rockwall. I heard police found guns and drugs in his car after he was arrested.”
According to Rockwall Police, the driver was accused of pointing a handgun at another driver about 9:30 am in Rowlett before crossing the Highway 66 bridge into Rockwall.
“The subject fled on foot from the accident scene toward a residential area north of the Downtown Square,” read a news release from Rockwall Police. “After a brief search of the area, officers took the suspect, Jeffrey Allen Lesley, into custody without incident. The Rockwall Police Department was assisted with the search by the Texas Department of Public Safety Helicopter Division.”
The suspect is now in Rockwall County Jail awaiting a hearing. The felon has been charged with 10 drug, weapons and other offenses.
